Note: These benefits are taxable and you will need to report all payments received on next year’s tax return. An information slip will be available for the 2020 tax year in My Account, under Income Tax Information Slips (T4 and over).

Understanding payment periods

Each Canada Emergency Benefit (CEP) payment covers a 4-week period, with the first period beginning March 15, 2020. When you apply, it’s a one-time payment covering a 4-week period. If your situation continues, you can apply for another 4-week period, up to a maximum of 16 weeks (i.e. 4 periods in total).

What are the payment methods?

The ECP will be paid by direct deposit , or by cheque if no direct deposit information is on your file.

When to expect payment

  • If the benefit is paid to you by direct deposit, you should receive it within 3 business days of the date you applied.
  • If the benefit is paid to you by cheque, you should receive it within 10 working days of the date on which you made your claim.

Reapply every 4 weeks

You’ll need to apply and confirm your eligibility for the Canada Emergency Benefit (CEP) every 4 weeks if your situation continues.
