As of today, the federal and provincial governments have announced new measures concerning GST/HST and QST returns.
The governments wish to offer support to businesses during this difficult period by authorizing the deferral of payment of taxes due until June 30, 2020 at the latest. It should be noted that no measures have been specified regarding the filing of tax returns. Thus, this relief is aimed solely at deferring payment, without interest or penalty, until June 30, 2020.
The deferral is based on the due date for tax payment, according to the frequency of the declaration.
We present a table summarizing the periods for which payment is deferred until June 30, 2020 at the latest:
| Frequency | Authorized period from deferral to June 30, 2020 for GST/HST and QST |
| Monthly | The following reporting periods :
|
| Quarterly | Any quarter ending in :
|
| Annual | Any annual return for which taxes are due or payable in :
And all GST/HST and QST instalments due in March, April or May 2020. |
In other words, regardless of frequency, any amount that becomes payable to the tax authorities as GST/HST and QST during the months of March, April and May 2020 can be remitted no later than June 30, 2020.
As the tax authorities have not yet clarified the obligation to file tax returns, we must advise our customers to continue to file their tax returns at the appropriate time.
As soon as we have more details, we’ll let you know. My team and I remain available to answer your questions.
