Socio-tax programs – Revenu Québec invites Quebecers to file their tax returns by September 30

Revenu Québec reminds Quebecers that they have less than a month left, until September 30, 2020, to file their income tax returns in order to continue to benefit from the socio-tax programs to which they are entitled.

It’s in everyone’s interest to file their tax returns promptly, as the vast majority of them are entitled to a tax refund. This is particularly true for those who benefit from social-tax programs such as the solidarity tax credit (CIS).

To help citizens cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, Revenu Québec has granted a temporary automatic renewal of the CIS. This measure expires at the end of the month. Those benefiting must file their income tax returns within the next few days to avoid having their payments deferred.

Beneficiaries of the tax credit for home support of seniors benefited from a similar relaxation. They were given extra time to file their request for renewal of advance payments. However, this measure will come to an end next month. Revenu Québec encourages those who have not yet done so to submit their renewal applications quickly.

September 30, 2020 is also the deadline for filing income tax returns without interest or penalty, and for paying tax balances and instalments that were due in the period beginning last March 17. This deadline affects individuals as well as certain corporations and trusts.

Individuals and businesses experiencing difficulties in making their payment by the deadline are encouraged to contact Revenu Québec as soon as possible to arrange a payment arrangement.

From the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Revenu Québec has been committed to administrative flexibility. In fact, it has implemented a series of measures to help Quebecers in recent months, including the following:

  • the deadline for filing tax returns has been extended to June1, 2020;
  • priority processing of tax returns that qualify for a tax refund;
  • temporary extension of payments under certain social and tax programs, such as the solidarity tax credit and the tax credit for home support for seniors;
  • additional time for recipients of the Shelter Allowance program to apply for renewal.

All the assistance measures announced by Revenu Québec are described on their website.
