Tax balance payment deadline extended to September 30

The Quebec government is extending a flexibility measure to help citizens and businesses cope with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The deadline for paying the tax balance has been extended from September1 to September 30, 2020.

This deferral will apply to individuals, corporations and trusts. It will help them get through this exceptional period by giving them almost one extra month to pay their tax balances, instalments and other amounts owing under tax legislation that were subject to the September1, 2020 deadline. This deferral will also apply to such amounts due during the month of September.

This measure is consistent with the new deadline announced today by the Canada Revenue Agency.

There will be no penalty or interest payable if these amounts are paid by September 30, 2020. Until that date, there will be no penalty for late filing.

Details of these measures can be found in the information bulletin published by the Ministry of Finance.

Revenu Québec encourages citizens and businesses who will have difficulty making their payments by the deadline to contact them as soon as possible to make a payment arrangement.

It’s in everyone’s interest to file their tax returns quickly, so they can get the money they’re entitled to more quickly. This is particularly true for citizens receiving tax credits and benefits.

From the outset of the COVID-19 crisis, Revenu Québec has been committed to administrative flexibility. It has implemented a series of measures to help Quebecers in recent months, including the following:

  • the deadline for filing tax returns has been extended to June1, 2020;
  • the extension to June 30, 2020 of the deadline for filing tax returns without penalty or interest;
  • priority processing of tax returns that qualify for a tax refund;
  • automatic temporary renewal of certain social and tax programs, such as the solidarity tax credit and the housing allowance program.

In addition, as of March 17, 2020, all recipients of advance payments of the Seniors’ Home Support Tax Credit (HSTC) have an additional period in which to apply for renewal. In the meantime, CMD advance payments are maintained.

Revenu Québec has announced that this flexibility measure will end in October 2020. It encourages those who have benefited from the automatic renewal of the advance payment of this credit to file their renewal application by December 1, in order to continue receiving their payments after that date.

All the assistance measures announced by Revenu Québec are described on their website.
